The Growing Schools Garden Birmingham

Key Links and Themes

GS Garden Birmingham

Key links

The structure, design and content of the garden will demonstrate links to three government initiatives:

It will be clear to schools and settings delivering the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage Guidelines that they can meet these requirements through learning outside the classroom.

Themes

The garden will have three clear strands:

  • Growing food and farming
  • Health and well-being
  • Creativity, arts, culture and heritage

These three  strands will also make some reference to these important underlying themes:

  • Sustainability (e.g. water, energy, biodiversity, recycling, the global dimension)
  • The natural environment
  • Enjoying and achieving
  • Economic well-being

The garden will demonstrate the good practice in school grounds use, design and management that is currently happening in schools across England.  The designer will work with approximately 20 schools identified by the steering group to recreate/create elements or features used for learning outside the classroom for the garden. The garden should be relevant to early years, primary and secondary and special educational needs sectors.
