Using Gardens and Woodland as a learning resource for SEN and EBD Pupils
This resource has been designed in particular to help KS3-4 teachers of children with special educational needs develop high quality learning experiences. The term ‘special needs’ includes: Emotional and Behavioural Needs, Sensory and Physical needs, Communication and Interactive needs, and Cognitive and Learning needs.
We, the authors, are all experienced teachers currently working in special needs settings, including EBD, where using gardens and woodland (as well as a range of other outdoor learning environments and opportunities) is well established.
Of many the many possibilities we have chosen three themes around which to offer examples of lesson plans, resources and case studies.

Growth Through Growing
Two booklets have been produced highlighting ways in which growing-related activities are being used to support the learning of students with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, and those with special educational needs. Using a mix of case studies and practitioner testimony they demonstrate the value of working with plants in helping students engage with learning, gain in confidence and develop new skills and abilities.
The booklets are only available in electronic format, and may be downloaded here:
